Designing a new kind of job hunting mobile app

Duration

Client

BTALENTS

Scope

Ironhack Project

Our client

Our client is a freshly new company that started as a school project between Essec Business School in France and Mannheim Business School in Germany.

Their mission is to assist manual and industrial workers in finding the ideal job.

Their mission

BTALENT’s goal is to create a job hunting mobile app dedicated to manual workers needs, using AI to suggest jobs that match their user’s profiles.

  • The app has to be a combination between Linkedin and Tinder.
  • It should hide diversity information
  • There should be a way to have only verified users.
  • No communication between users and companies should be possible before matching.
  • A desktop version for companies would be a nice to have

Problem

There is a mismatch today between what companies want and manual workers needs. Without any platform really dedicated to them, companies struggled to recruit while lots of manual workers are without jobs.

Our goal

Our goal is to understand manual workers needs to provide a process that actually match their needs, while designing an easy-to-use mobile app.

Deliverables:

  • Research insights summary
  • User journey and user Flow
  • High fidelity App mockup
  • High fidelity brand logo
  • Brand Design

01. Our Study

A mismatch between what companies ask and what manual workers want

there is a shortage of industrial and manual workers in Europe but at the same time lots of them are without jobs.

93% of recruiters have difficulty finding new employees for physically demanding jobs, but recruiters value traditional application materials such as resume, portfolios and cover letters while while job seekers prefer a simplified application process without cover letters and resume.

  • 57% use Linkedin when searching for a job, even though it’s not a platform dedicated to them.
  • 54% already faced challenges related to diversity when searching for job opportunities.
  • Certifications and technical skills are, with the work experience, the main information used for job applications.
  • Lack of information about job requirements, inefficient communication with employers and difficulty in finding reputable companies are the main challenges when applying for a job.

02. OUR MAIN USER

Let’s meet Etienne

All our research allowed us to create Etienne, our main user.

His main goals are to be able to support his family and find a company he can trust.

But it’s actually difficult when he struggles to find a new job without any dedicated platform and when the way he applies to job doesn’t match what companies ask him.

03. OUR Mission

To provide a process that match industrial and manual workers needs, and make it as simple as possible.

04. IDEATION

Our first prototypes

Next step, combine our ideas to make a usually difficult process as simple as possible.

To do that, we brainstormed and thanks an ideation process we had some ideas:

  • 1 screen = 1 task
  • Use relevant animations to avoid having to enter too much text
  • Possibility to upload a resume to save time
  • Use AI to help users describe their work experience for example
  • Use visual elements like a progress bar to help the user visualizing the process

All these elements lead us to create Lo Fi prototypes and Mid Fi prototypes that we tested several times with our main users.

We were able to better grasp our users’ wants and improve our prototypes thanks to all of these tests.

For instance, we considered giving our consumers the option to select the precise days and hours they would like to work. However, employees in these types of professions frequently change the days they work from week to week. Therefore, we gave them the option to select how many days of the week they would like to work and whether they are open to work on weekends.

Additionally, we included a way for uploading certifications, made screens to introduce the app’s concept at the start of the procedure, and included a map to display the distance radius.

05. BTALENT BRAND DESIGN

Let’s make something nice

Our design objectives were to preserve the bee logo they already had, as all of the pieces tell a story and represent important values for them, such as hard work and collaboration. They also wanted to preserve the blue, but they didn’t want a “Linkedin blue”.

Regarding the headlines fonts, we wanted to choose a font simple, modern and strong.

Nunito is a well balanced sans serif typeface with a full set of weights, and it has a regular non-rounded terminal version, Nunito Sans, which appeared to us as an obvious choice.

Avenir is a straightforward, incredibly readable, and elegant typeface for the body text.

06. OUR HI FI PROTOTYPE

Last but not least

To understand our prototypes, it’s important to know that the app has 2 different parts.

01. The Onboarding Part

Where the user enter all his information about his profil and his wanted job (mandatory for the app to be able to show him the best jobs for im).

Making a sometimes challenging process simple was the primary task for this section. As we can see, we have lots of steps to describe our user profil, work experience, education, what job he wants, his soft and hard skills, upload his certifications… We tried to make it as visual as possible, one step at a time, with encouraging messages.

The profil settings part have 12 different steps. The job search part has 8 different steps.

02. The Matching Part

This is the main part of the app our users can access after setting up their profile. Here they can find the perfect job for them thanks to the matching algorithm and the easy-to-use swipe and match feature. They have a dashboard to access all their job applications, the abaility to chat and exchange documents with companies they had a match with, and of course a profile to change their settings.

07. NEXT STEPS

Keep testing!

Our next steps would be:

  • Add an academic feature. As the lack of growth opportunity is a big issue for industrial and manual workers, an academic feature could be a great help for them to acquire more skills and find jobs really made for them.
  • Add a task reminders, as users and companies can schedule calls and sent each other documents.
  • Design the entire desktop version, mainly for companies first.
  • Keep testing!
